Be Prepared to the Interview

Prepare for a phone interview just as you would for a regular interview. Compile a list of your strengths and weaknesses, as well as a list of answers to typical phone interview questions. In addition, plan on being prepared for a phone conversation about your background and skills.

Practice Interviewing

Talking on the phone isn't as easy as it seems. I've always found it's helpful to practice. Have a friend or family member conduct a mock interview and tape record it so you can see how you sound over the phone.

During the Phone Interview

  • Don't smoke, chew gum, eat, or drink.
  • Smile. Smiling will project a positive image to the listener and will change the tone of your voice.
  • Speak slowly and enunciate clearly.
  • Use the person's title (Mr. or Ms. and their last name.) Only use a first name if they ask you to.

What information should I ask of the family?

At the beginning you will be asked how you are today? It is a general question and the proper answer is I'm fine thank you, and you? After this initial question you can tell: I am very happy for the opportunity to talking to you. I am very excited and a little bit nerves.

You should ask as many questions as you need to be able to make a decision as to whether this is the right family for you.

Here are some sample questions to get ready:

  • Have you had an au pair before? If the answer is yes, then we ask; why is she leaving now? May we speak with her?
  • Why do you want an au pair? Why do you need an au pair?
  • How many children do you have, what are their ages, their hobbies and interests, their dislikes?
  • How many hours a week do you think the au pair will be working?
  • How many nights of babysitting per week?
  • What time off will you allow?
  • What paid leave?
